Upon the announcement of his upcoming North American tour, Perfume Genius (a.k.a. Mike Hadreas) hinted that a new album was on the way. Now, full details have arrived. He'll release No Shape on May 5 via Matador Records.
Hadreas recorded the new record in Los Angeles with producer Blake Mills, and it marks the follow-up to 2014's Too Bright.
According to a press release, No Shape builds on the eccentric influences of its predecessor, "merging church music, make out music, R&B, art pop, krautrock, and queer soul into his take on stadium anthems" — unabashedly striving to deliver full-blown pop tunes.
A statement from Hadreas about the new LP reads:
I pay my rent. I'm approaching health. The things that are bothering me personally now are less clear, more confusing. I don't think I really figured them out with these songs. There's something freeing about how I don't have it figured out. Unpacking little morsels, magnifying my discomfort, wading through buried harm, laughing at or digging in to the embarrassing drama of it all. I may never come out the other side but it's invigorating to try and hopefully, ultimately helpful. I think a lot of them are about trying to be happy in the face of whatever bullshit I created for myself or how horrible everything and everyone is.
Lead single "Slip Away" is the first example of Hadreas's new sonic direction, and it's been paired with a music video courtesy of Björk collaborator Andrew Thomas Huang. It features a close look at the relationship between two sisters, one of whom is played by Hadreas.
