Owls

"Ancient Star Seed..."

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Feb 4, 2014

Ahead of the release of Owls' aptly titled sophomore set Two, the reunited Chicago quartet are previewing the platter with a dizzying, though oddly still downtempo post-rock adventure dubbed "Ancient Star Seed..."

As with most anything associated with six-string phenom Victor Villarreal, the track is heavy on fluid and fanciful guitar play, with competing polyrhythmic strums and riffs streaming out of opposing speakers. Sam Zurick offers up distorted walking bass lines, while Tim Kinsella's patchwork of obtuse imagery moves from discussing the god of sunlight to analyzing the confusing nature of relationships ("We've never really even been friends with anyone but myself").

The track explodes into a confusing whirlwind of rhythms in the back end, and you can suss out the direction of the conceptual piece down below.

Two hits retailers March 25 through Polyvinyl Records.
