Ought's Tim Darcy Announces 'Saturday Night' Solo LP

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Nov 30, 2016

After delivering two impressive albums with Ought (2014's More Than Any Other Day and 2015's Sun Coming Down) and collaborating with artists like Charlotte Cornfield and AJ Cornell, Tim Darcy has announced plans for his debut solo album. The full-length from the Ought vocalist is titled Saturday Night, and it's due out on February 17 through Jagjaguwar.

Imagery of water and one's "inner current" pulses through the entire record, linking each song together. "It's about how good it feels to make art, and how terrifying," a press release explains. "How you don't always get to choose whether you're swimming or drowning as we grow and move through life, just that you're going to keep diving in."

Sonically speaking, fans of Ought can rest assured they'll be hearing more of Darcy's signature voice and unique phrasing, complete with over-enunciation, whoops and croons, though moments of "softness" and "musicality" are also prominent across the 11 new tracks.

The songs were recorded with friends in the storage room of a Toronto studio during a six-month period that overlapped with the making of Sun Coming Down, resulting in a collection of songs that are as "intimate and rollicking as a house show" and as "delicate as a late-night phone call."

The first preview of the solo album has arrived with the video for opening cut "Tall Glass of Water." The clip was directed by Jonny Look and features a series of turtleneck and blazer-sporting Darcy lookalikes congregating under surreal circumstances.
