Ambient house pioneers the Orb have been steadily releasing music for over 20 years, despite numerous personnel changes and the tragic death of former member Andy Hughes. This fall, the band are due to release a new LP, Metallic Spheres, which will feature Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour.
As the press release points out, the album began with Gilmour recording guitar work with producer Youth. The Orb then reworked these unfinished tracks into their album.
The collection is divided into two parts: "Metallic Side" and "Spheres Side." Each of these sides is split into five sections. The album features "David Gilmour's discernible electric guitar and lap steel guitar, Alex Paterson's sound manipulation, keyboards and turntables, and Youth's bass guitar and keyboards."
Metallic Spheres will be available on double LP, as well as CD and digital formats. In addition, it will come out on double CD, with the second disc containing a 3D60 mix. Apparently, that means "a three dimensional world of 360 degree surround sound."
It will be out in the UK on October 4 via Columbia, which may mean October 5 here in North America.
