Buzz Killed

BY Aaron LevyPublished Oct 29, 2007

The Buzz Killed EP shows a tenfold improvement beat-wise from Opaq Face’s 2004 EP Close Enough. Where the latter opens with a straight-up, boring trance pulse, Buzz Killed takes more of an industrial edge, drawing the melodic sequencing away from the Euro-club flavour that so soured songs like "Am I” on Close Enough, bringing the project a little further out of the ’80s. The effect shows right away, with a reasonably cool synth bridge on the opening title track. Opaq Face’s most easily recognisable resemblance is to Rammstein, maybe with a little bit of Pop Will Eat Itself in the mix. "Carnyvale Stomp” has fun with wordplay and it’s definitely got staying power if it’s the last thing you’ve listened to.
