In the post-Oscar Peterson era, Montrealer Oliver Jones is recognized not just as arguably Canada's best living jazz pianist, but as one of the best anywhere. No surprise then that this live offering was recorded in Switzerland, back in 1990. With ace sidemen Reggie Johnson (bass) and veteran drummer Ed Thigpen in tow, Jones has the classic piano trio format and he utilizes its full potential, giving his rhythm section room to stretch out. His playing is as elegant and tasteful as ever, though he lets rip, Ray Charles-style, on gospel-flavoured classic "Just a Closer Walk with Thee." Three impressive originals fit snugly alongside interpretations of standards like "Falling in Love with Love," Monk's magnificent "Round Midnight" and a Gershwin medley. Fittingly, Jones closes out the set with an homage to Peterson, performing his stirring "Hymn to Freedom" with passion and finesse. This is a lovely showcase of an artist at the peak of his powers.
