OK Go have shared "This," a track from the film The Beanie Bubble, which the band's lead singer Damian Kulash co-directed with his wife Kristin Gore.
Gore, who also wrote the screenplay, wrote the idea for the song into the film. "The term said, 'We close to unbelievably joyful music," explained Kulash [via Variety]. The song, a jaunty piece filled with horns and snappy guitar, certainly delivers.
"After almost two hours of a musical journey through 20th-century pop music — which is like the most satisfying mix tape of all time, for me personally — we needed the final beat of the film to bring viewers back to the present day," Kulash said. "Our fable about the American Dream is over, and as the lights come up we want you sinking into that bittersweet-victory flavour of nostalgia."
The film, which stars Zach Galifianakis, Elizabeth Banks and Sarah Snook, tells the story of the Beanie Baby phenomenon which grew into a $1.4 billion USD market before the bubble burst in 1999 when they increased production of the rare Beanie Babies.
"I was excited to write a song that would lean into all of that," Kulash said. "It's not too sad, but there's an asterisk to it."
The Beanie Bubble is out in limited theatres today (July 21) and premiers on AppleTV+ on July 28.
