2009 has been a good year for each of the principals of Afro/Latin/psychedelic ensemble Ocote Soul Sounds. Adrian Quesada's main group, Brownout, released an acclaimed album and Martin Perna continues to gig steadily with Antibalas. Unfortunately, their summertime release Coconut Rock, kind of limped out of the gate.
Consider the forthcoming re-release a do-over. Repackaged as a "deluxe edition" this overlooked warm weather gem offers up a few more variations of their surreal down-tempo grooves from imaginary tropical lands.
Fresh off a fall tour, the duo hope to make a bigger impression in the winter months when the reboot is released on December 8, once again on Eighteenth Street Lounge (ESL) out of DC.
There are a few more tracks on the new edition, including this darker and more dubwise remix of "Cara De Yo No Fui" by Ancient Astronauts which replaces the dreaminess of the original with a more aggressive skank.
