Norma MacDonald

'Burn the Tapes' (album stream)

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Jun 4, 2015

Nova Scotia-based alt-country songstress Norma MacDonald is set to release her latest full-length effort Burn the Tapes next week, but Exclaim! is giving you a chance to hear it in its entirety right now.

Inspired by and echoing greats like Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris and Townes Van Zandt, MacDonald sings pensive, melancholic songs but with a lightness and warmth to her voice. That enchanting blend is heard throughout the record, from nostalgic opener "Company" to the darkly orchestral "You Can't Carry It Around" and right up to the bluegrass-infused closer "Hard to Get Back."

There's also a duet with former Guthries singer Gabe Minnikin ("Lighten Up") and a tribute to none other than Bruce Springsteen ("To Nebraska"). A press release describes the album as "a soundtrack to a nighttime drive" — an apt description that captures the space between restlessness and peacefulness where Burn the Tapes resides.

The album is officially out on June 9, but you can hear it for yourself in the player below right now.
