Last year, ethereal Swedish pop act Niki and the Dove released a couple of singles that managed to turn more than a few heads. Their debut "DJ, Ease My Mind"/"Under the Bridges" single, released on UK imprint Moshi Moshi, gelled via new wave hooks and singer Malin Dahlstrom's luscious vocal work. The follow-up, "Mother Protect," was a gorgeous slice of art-house electro pop that wove synthetic woodwinds and rumbling percussion together into a fantastical journey of epic proportions. We were hooked right from the start, and it looks as if iconic indie label Sub Pop feels the same way: the imprint has just signed the Stockholm-based act.
A blog post on the label's site confirms the signing, praising the band over their tunes, but no details have been laid out just yet as to when we can expect a new release.
"Their songs are full of magic and light but with an unsettling darkness hidden beneath the surface," the label said in a statement. "It's pop music but a world away from the production line aesthetics of much modern chart music."
Expect to hear a lot more form these magical synth poppers in the near future.
