'A Nightmare on Elm Street' Scores Get Collected in New Box Set

An unlucky many of us are still menaced nightly by our unconscious thoughts of dreamscape murderer Freddy Krueger, and now the striped sweater-sporting monster is about to haunt our stereo speakers too. A massive eight-CD box set gathering the sounds of the A Nightmare on Elm Street series is set to be released in time for the Halloween season.

Soundtrack hub Varese Sarabande will deliver its A Nightmare on Elm Street collection on October 16, issuing it in a limited-edition run of 2,000 copies. Collected within will be various composers' approach to scoring to Freddie's on-screen slaughtering.

The set includes Charles Bernstein's synth- and piano-driven work to 1984's Wes Craven's A Nightmare on Elm Street and sequel scores from Christopher Young (A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge), Angelo Badalamenti (A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors), Craig Safan (A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master), Jay Ferguson (A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child), Brian May (Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare), and J. Peter Robinson (Wes Craven's New Nightmare).

Filling out the collection is a disc featuring Graeme Revell's score to 2003 horror series crossover Freddy Vs. Jason. In addition to the Nightmare score work, the collection also includes the videogame suite from Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare and a Machine Head-delivered twist on Harry Manfredini's Friday the 13th theme from Freddy Vs. Jason. All told, the box set promises 3 hours' worth of bonus tracks.

The release features newly commissioned art from Shawn Conn, while the package also contains replications of Matthew Joseph Peak's Nightmare art. Unfortunately, though, there's no sign of any vinyl release.

If this sounds like the horror movie music collection of your dreams, you can find out more about the track listing, art and pre-order info over here.

This, mind you, isn't the first A Nightmare on Elm Street soundtrack release to land this year. One Way Static recently offered up a 7-inch repress of metal band Dokken's "Dream Warriors" theme for A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors.
