Last we heard from Edmonton-based musician Mitch Holtby, he was dropping a video as Mitchmatic for the introverted hip-hop jam "Better Alone." Now, he's back with another new single called "Take It (As You Can)" — and Exclaim! has got your first listen to it.
In addition to making his own music, Holtby is currently drumming in Faith Healer and has performed with artists like Cadence Weapon and Renny Wilson, playing everything from saxophone, keyboards, drums, percussion and helping out on vocal duties. But on the new track under his Mitchmatic moniker, Holtby steps into the spotlight.
"Take It (As You Can)" hears him getting his disco groove on, toying with shimmery synths and twinkling keys, while a drum machine provides a steady, dancefloor-friendly backbeat. He even ditches his MC skills in favour of dreamy, melodic vocals.
"This track is kind of a coming-out party for my non-hip-hop stuff," he told Exclaim! in a statement. "I've been jumping in with a lot of bands over the years on different instruments but haven't represented that facet in my own songs as much. Mostly, I'm just really into danceable downers and wanted to contribute."
