First some history about Mika Miko from their label PPM: "They got chased by vampires, played in a free mason temple, used to be crusty (but are still crusty at heart) and four out of five of them still live with their parents. They'd rather play at some kid's house for a birthday party in the valley and not get paid than play some rock club. See them and you will know the truth about the pony funk."
Part of L.A.'s the Smell community, along with No Age, Abe Vigoda, HEALTH, the Mae Shi and Silver Daggers, Mika Miko have finally come back to us with a follow-up to 2007's fierce 666 EP and last year's tease of a Sub Pop single, Sex Jazz. Though We Be XUXA isn't set for release till May 5 through Dean Spunt's PPM label, they're currently offering up a freebie to get the blood flowing.
Unfortunately it's not the fowl play of "Turkey Sandwich" but "I Got A Lot" demonstrates that the fiery fivesome have come a long way in clearing up the muddy no-fi racket of 2006's C.Y.S.L.A.B.F., using surf rock riffs and anthemic choruses.
In fact, much of We Be XUXA is set on a more linear approach and jammin' out some straight up, pure SoCal rock. No worries though, they're not completely abandoning the no waveisms that make them Mika Miko, it's just now there's a lot more of the Runaways' melodicism mixed in with the rampant influence of that first Red Cross EP and the collected works of Kleenex/Liliput.
