Former leader of Quebec City indie-pop band Abrdeen, Meggie Lennon, has announced her debut solo record. Sounds from Your Lips will be released on July 9 via Mothland.
The album was produced by Samuel Gemme (Anemone, Corridor, the Brooks) and is self-described as "make-out dream-pop," drawing influence from late-'60s to early-'70s psychedelia and early-2010s Beach House and MGMT in equal measure. Lead single "Night Shift" is a fitting synopsis, building from its sparse monophonic introduction into gleaming beams of incandescent synths and progressive charges of fuzzy guitar. The track relishes in being both languid and stirring.
In a statement about the single, Lennon said: "The first part of the song came to me while cycling home back from L'Esco after a wild night. I was on a Bixi and the streets were completely empty. I was riding fast through the night and it felt both meditative and exhilarating — this feeling is reflected in the dreamy verses and then heavier guitar crescendo at the end."
The accompanying music video — directed by Marielle Normandin Pageau — carries forth the lyrical theme of light with beautiful cinematography. We see Lennon perform in several habitats, including a parked car, a bathtub and a lakeside; naturally, she's accompanied by raindrops, submerged or "walking in a sea of pride." It's a visual representation of the track's sultry, near-spoken thesis statement: "Take a glimpse outside."
