LateNightTales

BY Daniel SylvesterPublished Nov 21, 2008

Arctic Monkeys’ drummer Matt Helders joins former dance floor donors Belle & Sebastian, Lidström and Air for the 21st instalment of the LateNightTales series. With a drummer-esque disregard for genre or image, Helders’ edition blends rock (the Stooges, Goblin), hip-hop (Roots Manuva, Zeph and Azeem) and electronic (Simian Mobile Disco, Modeselektor) with a focus on energy and dynamics over BPMs and grooves. Brimming with rhythm, Helders lets his selected tracks play out, giving the listener four minutes to figure out how to dance to the Black Keys. The highlight of the DJ mix may be the flawless re-imagining of the mid-’90s Italian dance classic "Dreamer” by Livin’ Joy, starring Helders as Giorgio Moroder. Playing out like a late night college radio program, Matt Helders doesn’t make it easy for you to dance the night away but at least you won’t have to grin through another remix of "Sandstorm.”
