Maica Mia

'Des Era' (album stream)

BY Alex HudsonPublished Jan 21, 2014

Montreal mood-setters Maica Mia used to be a duo, but they got Godspeed You! Black Emperor's Mauro Pezzente involved on bass for their new album, effectively expanding on and evolving their sound. Des Era is out on January 28, and it's available to stream ahead of time on Exclaim.ca.

The songs were initially stripped down and minimal, but the band worked on them for months, eventually building up more ornate arrangements with help from Pezzente.

The album only contains five tracks, but the whole thing clocks in at more than 40 minutes thanks to epic-length songs, most of which are around eight minutes or more. These are generally slow-moving, melancholic ballads that are filled with distortion and dark post-rock drama.

Hear Des Era below. Maica Mia will celebrate its release with a show at Montreal's La Sala Rossa on January 24.
