Looper The Geometrid

While Belle and Sebastian moves in a Nick Drake-ish English folk direction on their latest, Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like A Peasant, the second album from ex-Belle bassist Stuart David's Looper finds them in, at times, a Stereolab state of mind, where at others there's a jumping, soul-rock dance feel. The looping "Modem Song" is a beautiful mesh of Penguin Cafe Orchestra and Pink Floyd, while "These Things" has a lazy summer vibe, complete with beatz. On paper, Looper numbers amongst the masses, merging old sounds in fresh ways, breaking down genre barriers, but The Geometrid stands alone as a beautiful, modern pop record. (Sub Pop)
