Despite heavy hitters like Kasabian, Glasvegas, the Horrors and Bat for Lashes populating the shortlist, newcomer Speech Debelle has taken the 2009 Mercury Music Prize for best British album of the year.
The London-based rapper, whose debut album Speech Therapy was released earlier this year, has yet to make any sort of announcement on her Twitter or MySpace page as of press time, presumably because she's still hung-over from the award festivities.
For winning the prize, Speech Debelle will be awarded £20,000, which is a Canadian equivalent of about $35,000, not to mention get some serious bragging rights. Not too bad at all.
