Canadian icon Lights delivers the explosive single "Prodigal Daughter," the first taste of her upcoming 2022 album — the specifics are still very hush-hush. The track arrives along with a provocative video starring the Timmins-born artist.
The alt-pop singer's new song — arriving via Fueled by Ramen — plays as an unapologetic anthem on self-exploration. "'Prodigal Daughter' is about stripping away all the deep-seated, oppressive expectations society and religion can place on you, in order to find out what you really want out of your life," Lights shared in a statement. "Musically, the song is dynamic and wild; beautifully gentle at times and aggressive at others, representing the journey. Ultimately this is a banger about finding yourself."
Drenched in red light, with tattoos and flowing dark hair on full display, we find Lights in all her glory in the video. Right on time for spooky season, we see the singer alternating between being covered in snakes, wielding a baseball bat and with a viscous blood-like substance dripping from her mouth (how very After Hours album cover).
The frenzied video frames the high-energy track perfectly, with Lights singing, "Baby I'm back" repeatedly in triumph. But, beware, the song might find you jumping to your feet or bumping your fist against the table.
The artist recently celebrated 10 years of Siberia by recreating the album cover — iconic side part and all. She also revealed "The Clinic," a side story from her Skin&Earth comic series.
