Lies

Underdogs and Infidels

BY Matt MernaghPublished Dec 1, 1999

Straddling the line between punk and goth has been done most notably by bands like Joy Division, Bauhaus and Alien Sex Fiend. You can now add the Lies to that list with their bleak and compassionless music. The band’s songs have desolate arrangements that seem to go on forever, causing an enjoyable form of agony that only the best bands are capable of. Well aware of the fact that they are driving their fans to the dark recesses of their minds, the Lies don’t even bother to offer up a song that could be used as an anti-depressant. Their sound sticks to the bleakest of the bleak — no speed-induced numbers, no rage, no pathetic poetry, just utter darkness.
