Canadian cello player Kye Marshall leads a melodic chamber ensemble graced by the lyrical invention of Don Thompson’s piano. Thompson plays on eight of Marshall’s ten original compositions, including three duo performances: the dynamic “A Blues in A” and two elegant ballads “Twilight” and “Evensong” that bring this splendid project to a satisfying finale. From funky double-tempo variations in the jaunty “Alimbo,” to freely flowing lines in the atmospheric “Winter’s End,” Marshall plays with a warm, sonorous vibrato. Her solo abilities and capacity for creative interplay match her skills as a composer and explain why she is able to sustain a level of brilliance and commitment throughout an impressive, all original program.
