Kurt Vile's music is frequently compared to heartland rock acts like Bob Seger or Tom Petty, but here's a new influence to include in the conversation: the Clash. Vile performed a cover of classic track "Guns of Brixton" for Google Play.

This in-studio rendition finds Vile and his band the Violators running through the reggae-flavoured punk anthem and remaining true to the threatening, slightly trippy spirit of the original.

This cover coincides with the arrival of the Clash's massive boombox reissue set. Google Play is also rolling out a multi-part documentary about the band called Audio Ammunition.
