Among horror soundtrack aficionados, Douglas Pipes is known as the composer who scored Monster House (2006) and Trick 'r Treat (2007). Now, he's got a new soundtrack on the way, as his score for the upcoming holiday-themed horror comedy Krampus will be released next week.
The album will be out digitally on December 4 through Back Lot Music, with a CD pressing to follow. Additionally, Waxwork Records will handle a vinyl pressing. It's not clear exactly when the vinyl will be released, but pre-orders are due to begin on the same day that the digital album comes out, which is also the day that the film arrives in cinemas.
The album consists of a whopping 27 tracks. This includes a digital bonus track, which is a cover of the Christmas classic "Carol of the Bells" (referred to here as "Krampus Karol of the Bells").
"We used melodies of Christmas carols, sometimes just fragments, sometimes altered, as well as traditional Christmas instruments throughout," Pipes said in a statement. "The greatest challenge for the score was moving through Christmas themes and comedy, into a dark fantasy tale, punctuated by aggressive horror music, without losing the thread of any of these styles — all the while keeping the Christmas spirit present."
The film was directed by Michael Dougherty and stars Adam Scott, Toni Collette, David Koechner, Allison Tolman, Conchata Ferrell, Stefania Lavie Owen and Krista Stadler. It's a about a family that incurs the wrath of a folkloric figure named Krampus (who is a bit like Santa's evil opposite). The trailer is at the bottom of the page.
