BC-based musician Kinnie Starr can effortlessly float between her titles of producer, songwriter, singer, rapper, poet and provocateur. She embraces all of these aspects of her career on her latest full-length release From Far Away, which you can stream before its release right here on Exclaim.ca.
For someone who takes on so many roles and identities, it's unsurprisingly that the newest record is tricky to pigeonhole. Bouncing between folk, rap, art-pop and poetry, she never settles on one genre.
From the previously heard sugary pop single "Summer Day" to the hip-hop- and electro-tinged, conservationist-minded "Save Our Waters," Starr is constantly refusing to define herself as any one thing. There are moments of simpler, folkier sound too, on songs like the title track and "Touch the Sky," with the ear catching something new on each listen.
Starr wrote, engineered, recorded and played all of the instrumentation on the album, making it a true product of her own. From Far Away arrives on September 30 via Aporia Records. Hear for yourself how the personal project turned out below.
