This Montreal performer's debut CD doesn't push any envelopes, but fits perfectly into an early '70s folk vibe, akin to Nick Drake or even Simon & Garfunkel. Comparisons to early Bruce Cockburn are also obvious, if only for his similar habit of documenting in what city and when each song was written - the album is split between Yellowknife and Quebec. His acoustic guitar work is exquisite, recorded with a warm touch that makes it sound like Smilovitch is playing in your living room, or better yet, by your campfire.
