Keith Yaun Quintet

Countersink

BY Richard MoulePublished Sep 1, 1999

While free improv guitarist Joe Morris casts a large shadow over the Boston improv scene, other six-stringers like Keith Yaun have been establishing a name for themselves. This is the debut from his quintet, which includes stalwart Mat Maneri on electric violin, who has worked with pianist Matthew Shipp. Like Morris, Yaun has a sublime sense of melodicism and swing that compliments the rhythmic and harmonic complexity of his playing. But Yaun is also sensitive accompanist and although his name gets top billing, this is a group conversation in the best sense where everyone has an equal and distinctive voice.
