K.C. Carlisle

The Evil Elvis

BY Rob NayPublished May 1, 2002

K.C. Carlisle plays faintly humorous horror-inspired rockabilly, sounding at times like a sedated Stray Cats after watching a succession of Ed Wood films. The Evil Elvis EP opens with "Trouble,” a slow, bluesy number that would fit in well at goth strip bars. "I Wanna Wed the Undead” combines an upbeat walking bass line with tactless lyrics and a not quite amusing delivery. "She’s My Witch” fares better, with a creepy guitar riff and haunted house cackling. Part of the essential problem with the Evil Elvis EP is that the horror/rockabilly gimmick isn’t particularly effective; it isn’t scary, amusing or particularly entertaining. More attention on songwriting and less focus on image might improve matters.
