Karen O

'Crush Songs' (album stream)

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Sep 5, 2014

Despite some soundtrack work, Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman Karen O is getting ready to unleash her first official solo album, Crush Songs, next week through Cult Records. If you wanted to peep the collection of lo-fi love songs ahead of time, you're in luck, as Exclaim.ca has the whole record ready to stream right now.

As previously reported, the album features a series of stripped-down, acoustic cuts O tracked between 2006 and 2007, though this marks the first time the tunes have been made available publicly. Written during a period where she wasn't sure if she'd ever fall for anyone again, the set is self-described in a statement as "the soundtrack to what was an ever continuing love crusade."

With 10 of its tracks coming in under two minutes long, Crush Songs presents curt, echo-blown moments like the sleepy-eyed "Comes the Night," the desolate country strummer "So Far," and the empty-armed, long-distance loneliness of "NYC Baby" ("I'd rather have my baby much, much closer to me lately").

Rough around the edges with its heart on its tattered sleeve, the intimate and confessional Crush Songs can be streamed in full down below if you're in Canada. The record officially lands September 9 through Julian Casablancas' Cult Records.
