On Sunergy, RVNG Intl. brings together two masters of the esoteric art of Buchla synthesis to produce a collaborative record comprising two extended ambient tracks. Celebrated Buchla pioneer Suzanne Ciani and relative newcomer Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith have created a harrowing work that pulses with the otherworldly sounds of the Buchla music easel.
The view of the Pacific Ocean from Ciani's home studio was reportedly a source of inspiration for these pieces, but if that's the case, it's not the Pacific as sunny, sandy, vacation destination, but rather the unknown danger of the deep that is channelled in the sprawling ambience of Sunergy.
"Closed Circuit" features brief spurts of melodic content that surface from below the waves of ambient droning, but this track and "A New Day" are intended as explorations in pacing, atmosphere and sound more than anything else. In this, they succeed; Ciani and Smith's exploitation of the Buchla's possibilities is exemplary, and worth looking into for fans of ambient or experimental music.
