Jukejoint

Organic Matter

BY Joshua OstroffPublished Jan 1, 2006

Toronto funk-jazz quartet Jukejoint returns to the record stores with a self-produced collection of instrumental jams on Organic Matter. Mixing up a half-dozen originals with a surf-esque Stevie Wonder cover and "interpretations" of several of jazz great Wayne Shorter's compositions (including a burbling version of "Deluge"), the group's chemistry is readily apparent. But while the record definitely gets its groove on, and features the occasionally inspired improv, there are no tracks that truly exceed the expectations laid out by their previous effort.
