A native of Nova Scotia, Jon McKiel describes his musical offerings as songs that ride "that elusive line between feathery folk and a total sludgefest." No one else has come up with a more apt description as of late, and a recent trip to Toronto was perfect for the man to demonstrate what exactly that description means.
We invited McKiel to the Exclaim! office, where he and his group delivered a performance of "I Know," taken from his 2014 self-titled EP.
Lining up alongside guitarist Evan Matthews (Yellowteeth, Mouthbreathers), drummer Colleen Collins and bassist David Trenaman (Construction & Destruction), McKiel locks into a steady guitar riff, accented by Matthews' tremolo-laced six-stringing. A stop-start chorus break soon leads the group back into the hypnotic main riff, before things open up into a rocking solo section for an outro.
