John Vanderslice Signs To Dead Oceans, Readies New Album For May Release

BY Brock ThiessenPublished Feb 4, 2009

John Vanderslice is bidding farewell to the folks at Barsuk and joining the ever-expanding ranks of Dead Oceans. The indie rock maestro and all-around nice guy made this announcement late Tuesday (February 3), saying the first fruits of this new partnership will be dubbed Romanian Names.

Via a note on Vanderslice's newly revamped website, he explains: "In the fall of 2007, I played shows with Bishop Allen and Bowerbirds. I was already in love with both bands. By the end of the tour I had fallen hard for their label, Dead Oceans. I had known [owner] Phil [Waldorf] for a few years and I deeply respected his taste in music. When he joined the Secretly Canadian/Jagjaguwar family, I started to pay close attention. I am honored to be in the game with these people! They are passionate, aware, loyal and SERIOUS."

And while there are few details yet about the upcoming Romanian Names, it does have a release date: May 19. Vanderslice also has several live dates scheduled leading-up to the album, and this spring will head out on the road with Mountain Goat John Darnielle, with the two treating U.S. audiences to solo performances and then a collaborative set.
