Joe Turner

Between Two Seconds

Formerly of the much-missed New England-based psych outfit Abunai, multi-instrumentalist Joe Turner proves himself to be much more than just a solid drummer on this unassuming debut solo trip. Handling the majority of the instrumentation himself on the album’s 11 tracks, when he does bring in a guest to help — like the Sunshine Fix’s Bill Doss or his former Abunai band band-mate Brendan Quinn — it’s merely to augment instead of take over. Turner has created a deliciously vibrant side of bright, wide-eyed psychedelic pop that is an absolute delight. Not too hard that it will alienate psych-pop fans and just tripped out enough that fans of the heavier side of things (think Hawkwind instead of Left Banke) will still find things interesting.
