Joe Satriani

Engines Of Creation

BY Kevin Stewart-PankoPublished May 1, 2000

Joe Satriani is no strange to the technology that a studio can provide a musician: drum machines, guitar synths, keyboards, every guitar effects pedal and all manner of studio trickery. But Satriani has discovered breakbeat, dub and jungle, and, yes, it does get pretty ridiculous. Any guitar album basically consists of the guitarist in question flexing their fingers and working his/her fretboard out to a chord progression usually based on the blues. Now, it's a similar degree of widdling, but atop a wack of electronica. There's no doubt that J.S. is an awesome guitar player, but this album seems more like an attempt to keep up with the rest of the musical world while continuing to churn out the same light speed variations on the phrygian and mixolydian modes.
