Jocelyn Robert

Canned Gods

Subtitled “a typical afternoon in the backyard in Phoenix, Arizona,” this sound collage creates an audio portrait of contemporary America by using sound effects recordings as source material. “War # 1” and “Roots” are brilliant examples of Robert’s methodology as she creates evocative portraits of dementia. In “Art,” she layers together samples of manic laughter that she then processes electronically into eerie contrapuntal loops. “Art” is a minimalist gem that recalls the electronic experiments of Bob Ostertag.
