Joane Hetu's release is her first solo outing, appropriately titled Alone In The Chants or Songs. The eight pieces are fairly quiet, meditative affairs for voice and/or alto saxophone. She uses the languages of jazz improvisation and sound poetry separately and in combination, evoking a stark space where only she exists, marking up the walls with plaintive cries and sharp skronks from her instruments. The range of expression is kept simple and is all the more effective for this, having a cumulative effect upon the listener.
