Jim James

"Sleepyhouse" (Blind Melon cover)

There's currently a Kickstarter campaign underway to raise funds for a documentary about late Blind Melon frontman Shannon Hoon. There's only a few days to go until the campaign is over, and the project is still tens of thousands of dollars below its goal, so My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James has given it a little extra promotion in the form of a cover song.

James covered Blind Melon's song "Sleepyhouse." While the original was a mid-tempo rock song, James turns it into a ghostly ballad with a sparse low-end heartbeat, soft falsetto coos and abstract, atmospheric instrumental textures.

James isn't the only one to cover Blind Melon in support of the movie. Seth Avett of the Avett Brothers did an acoustic webcam take of "St. Andrew's Fall," while Brian Fallon of the Gaslight Anthem did a similarly stripped-down version of "Mouthful of Cavities."
