Hamilton, ON-born singer-songwriter Jeremy Fisher has been regaling audiences with his earnest folk ballads and powerful solo performances ever since he came on the music scene way back in 2001, but on his sixth album — and second for Hidden Pony Records — the acclaimed Canadian musician is uprooting his roots rock sound in favour of a more sickly sweet sonic progression.
Hear the fruits of his labour by streaming his new LP, The Lemon Squeeze, ahead of its album drop on May 13.
The decision to make a fully formed pop album came to fruition after a discussion with production duo Gus Van Go and Werner F (the Stills, Hollerado). "When we first sat down, we batted around the idea of a pop record that would stay true to my typical, acoustic guitar-driven solo show," Fisher said in a statement. "But when I started to write, the songs just weren't coming on guitar."
After listening to Randy Newman's 1972 album Sail Away, the seeds of a more pop-inspired, plaintive piano LP were laid in Fisher's head.
The result is a pungent pop album that includes elements of radio-ready rock (the Serna Ryder-assisted "Uh-Oh," album opener ""I Love You… So?") "Mellow Yellow"-aping bombast ("Song in My Heart") and beguiling, F-bomb dropping Birthday ballads ("Happy Day").
Hear for yourself by listening to the album in full, which can be found underneath Fisher's upcoming tour itinerary below. You can also pre-order the album here.
