J Mascis and the Fog

More Light

BY Sara MontgomeryPublished Feb 1, 2001

Fourteen years and countless imitators after J Mascis changed indie rock (for a while) with Dinosaur Jr. comes the solo career of J Mascis accompanied by the Fog. The More Light disc, taken on its own, is rather unremarkable with some decent enough rock/pop songs and some absolutely awful artwork. Taken as part of a musical legacy, it represents another step in the journey of a songwriter who actually made a difference in the course of rock history. Famous friends Guided By Vices Robert Pollard and My Bloody Effects Unit Kevin Shields add little more than name dropping. Though personally I prefer J's earlier work, you could jump into his career anywhere along the line and hear songs and guitar playing leagues above most of the shoddy calibre rock pabulum that is fed to the bored youth of the first world.
