When we caught word that Dinosaur Jr. frontman J. Mascis would be releasing a solo studio album called Several Shades of Why on Sub Pop, it immediately became one of our most anticipated releases for 2011. Recent Dino Jr. work has proven that Mascis's songwriting is as strong as ever, and the prospect of a stripped-down acoustic setting seems like the ideal showcase for that.
Sub Pop has just dropped album track "Not Enough" and, as expected, it's sparse arrangement sets an ideal backdrop for Mascis's timeless songwriting. Two acoustic guitars, some minor percussion and harmonized vocals pop up here and there, but Mascis's classic voice is the central aspect of the track.
