J. Cole's new video for Born Sinner single "Crooked Smile" takes a detour from the grill-discussing lyrics to weigh in on the War on Drugs.
Inspired by the events surrounding the death of Aiyana Stanley Jones, a seven-year-old girl shot and killed by authorities during a 2010 drug raid in Detroit, the video traces a day in the life of a drug dealer (played by Cole), a DEA agent, and how their lives sadly intertwine. The peppy single weaves in and out of the video, with a solemn synth adaptation of "The Star-Spangled Banner" taking over soundtracking duties post-bust.
