Isan

Salamander

BY Mike BurrowsPublished Jul 1, 2000

Robin Saville and Antony Ryan use old gear to make new sounds and they are brilliant at it. Old gear earmarks, according to Isan, include "bits of wood on the sides and top, broken keys..." How such pacifying and playful trebles are blended with unnerving, compelling base frequencies is their secret. Always found in the tempo equivalent of meander, speed is just not a viable option for their mode. Don't worry - Darla and Warp didn't, both have featured tracks on recent compilations by these English boys. Isan stands for "integrated services analogue network," not that any of it, or anything at all matters after half-a-minute of their new album has played near you.
