Heads Phased For Dreamless Sleep

BY Alan RantaPublished Sep 20, 2011

Drew Bandos may be a fresh-faced 20-year-old from Philly, but his music reveals an old soul. He's a multi-instrumentalist who records his tracks with a minimum of rehearsals and takes, yet his entire debut album, Heads Phased For Dreamless Sleep, has such weight and reflection. The obvious point of reference for his shoegazing, downtempo electronic sound is Boards of Canada, but with a more organic feel. Bandos allows his tracks to peak from time to time, his vocals awash in so much reverb and delay that they're mostly unintelligible ruminations from the ether, his guitar and synthetic percussion echoing over each other. His tracks swell up like waves approaching the beach, some curling over into themselves, while others merely tease the inevitable break and rollback. Indeed, this is an album meant to wash over the listener, to cleanse the palate and spirit.
