After 35 years together (including 15 without deceased frontman Michael Hutchence), Australian rock group INXS have reportedly called it quits.
The news comes via the Brisbane Times, who report that the band said their goodbyes from the stage at their show in Perth, Australia on Sunday (November 11). Drummer Jon Farriss took the mic from singer Ciaran Gribbin towards the end of the set to reveal that it would be "the last time" that the group performed together.
Farriss added that the band intentionally avoided making an announcement before the show, but was quick to thank fans for their support over three and a half decades. He also said he was "getting teary" before launching into their hit "Need You Tonight."
The band have yet to make an official statement, but J.D. Fortune, the Canadian singer who won the band's Rock Star: INXS reality show and acted as their frontman until last year, tweeted, "They are my friends and I feel very sad for them. It was an honour to have been a part of the bands history."
UPDATE: On Tuesday (November 13), the band confirmed that they will stop being active as a live band and issued the following statement, "We understand that this must come as a blow to everybody, but all things must eventually come to an end. We have been performing as a band for 35 years, it's time to step away from the touring arena. Our music will of course live on and we will always be a part of that. We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to all the friends and family that have supported us throughout our extensive career. Our lives have been enriched by having you all as a part of the journey."
INXS released Original Sin in 2010. Our reviewer described it as "the kind of record fans of the band will hate and nobody else will care about."
