Poor Folks Welcome

BY Michael JohnstonPublished Jun 1, 2001

Sunny hippy-rock quartet Invisible Inc. write catchy songs that charm. With CSNY/Beach Boys-style vocal harmonies, jammy '70s grooves, and a lo-fi sound aesthetic, Poor Folk's Welcome has an irresistible energy. Songwriting duties are evenly split between guitarists David Celia and Mark Stewardson; Celia's riffy "Welcome to the Show" opens the disc, and Stewartson's "High Tide" sounds like a forgotten gem left off a '60s hits compilation. By the second half of the disc, their songs weaken and lose the spark of the album's first half. Their un-ironic, feel-good sound, however, provides a refreshing dose of Toronto pop for the upcoming summer.
