Not too long ago, Detroit rapper (and brother of late producer J Dilla) Illa J moved up to Montreal. He's since entrenched himself into the Great White North's hip-hop scene later by hooking up with Canadian producers the Potatohead People (a.k.a. Nick Wisdom and AstroLogical). Together, they've put together J's self-titled debut LP, which is now being previewed with a cut called "Universe." You can check out the track's chilled out grooves and the rapper's smooth moves in a video.
The track is covered in a twilight glow, and comes packaged with late night piano tones and a deep drum machine beat. Illa J raps and sings on the cut, in which he tries his best pick-up lines on a lady ("you should be a bird 'cuz you're so fly"). As such, there are scenes of the guy trying his lines out in person, as well as shot of him dancing around a warehouse in a spiffy tux.
While Illa J arrives in full October 2 via Bastard Jazz, you can check out the video for "Universe" down below. The single is also currently on sale on iTunes.
