The more anonymous I:Cube are futuristic about the past. Their beats borrow from classic techno, house, electro and dub, but the programming seems to be inscribed with the philosophy of progress that inspired the birth of those genres. Similarly, the technology used on Adore appears to be a collection of old analog and digital synths, but the sounds are embraced as though they’re being reinvented all over again. Ironically, I:Cube’s songwriting is full of angst, and as it shifts from a melodic sense of melancholy to euphoria, one would suggest that Darkdancer would be a better title for the album. It’s a confident, rather than celebratory release, suggesting that when the future and the past meet like this, the present suddenly has presence.
