Drawn from the catalogues of Blue Note and Knitting Factory, this anthology compliments the new book by Howard Mandel about recent developments in jazz. Eric Dolphy’s brilliant tribute to Thelonious Monk, “Hat and Beard,” eclipses everything else here, although the substantial performances of Thomas Chapin, Crispell/Hemingway, Bailey/Metheny and the trio of Reid/Sharp/Zorn show why Knitting Factory is busy creating music while Blue Note sounds busy creating money.
