Hot Hot Heat's landmark debut album, 2002's Make Up the Breakdown, is getting a 20th anniversary reissue. It's out December 2 through Sub Pop.
At the time, Make Up the Breakdown represented a stylistic shift for the Victoria band, who began as a hardcore/synth-punk band before keyboardist Steve Bays took over lead vocals and the band embraced a more melodic new wave sound for their debut. Make Up the Breakdown included the singles "Bandages," "Talk to Me, Dance with Me" and "No, Not Now." It was produced by grunge figure Jack Endino, with additional engineering and mixing by Death Cab for Cutie's Chris Walla.
This Deluxe Edition of the album includes two bonus tracks — "Apt. 101" and "Move On" — bringing the total up to 12. These songs were previously exclusive to the UK pressing of the single "Bandages."
Make Up the Breakdown is available to pre-order from Sub Pop. Select indie stores will get a yellow vinyl variant.
Hot Hot Heat broke up in 2016 and released their final album that year. Bays told Exclaim! at the time, "The band felt like it was over, so let's make that a cool positive thing."
Make Up the Breakdown:
1. Naked in the City Again
2. No, Not Now
3. Get In or Get Out
4. Bandages
5. Oh, Goddamnit
6. Aveda
7. This Town
8. Talk to Me, Dance with Me
9. Save Us S.O.S.
10. In Cairo
11. Apt. 101
12. Move On
