Were you disappointed when Gossip Girl actor Penn Badgley was picked to play Jeff Buckley in the upcoming biopic about the late rock crooner? Well, we have some good news for you: there are actually two different Buckley biopics on the way.
Apparently, Badgley will star in Greetings from Tim Buckley. This will focus on Buckley in the days leading up to a tribute concert for his deceased father, Tim. The show took place in Brooklyn on April 26, 1991, and helped to forward Jeff's career. The movie will be directed by Dan Algrant (People I Know, Sex in the City) and will begin shooting in August.
A press release says: "Through a romance with a young woman working at the concert, he comes to understand the father who abandoned him. Culminating in a cathartic performance of his father's most famous songs, Jeff's debut stuns the audience and launches his career as one of the greatest young musicians of his time."
As for the second biopic, it's based on David Browne's biography Dream Brother: The Lives and Music of Jeff and Tim Buckley. This will likely be a more life-spanning feature.
The details of this second film are still scarce, and the star has not yet been chosen. As previously reported, possible leads include Jared Leto, James Franco and Robert Pattinson. Jeff's mother (Tim's wife) Mary Guibert will serve as executive producer for the feature, which will see music video master Jake Scott direct a script by Ryan Jaffe (The Rocker).
